Peter Athans
Mountaineer
In 2007 this renowned mountaineer and veteran of seven Mount Everest summits discovered an ancient cave city in a remote Nepalese valley, containing priceless art from the 13th century and clues that the area may have served as a holy site for the birth of Tibetan Buddhism, and inspired the legends of Shangri-La. Earlier this year, he returned with a multidisciplinary team to properly document, study, and begin to preserve the treasures he had found. He is speaking on this topic in Chicago this spring.
